A FAIRY TALE FOR GROWN UPS

panslabposter4.jpgI’ve been dying to see Pan’s Labyrinth for weeks now and I finally got the chance tonight - WOW! If you’re a fan of cinema and the art of story telling, look no further, this is the movie for you.

Pan’s blurbs:

Set in 1940s Spain against the postwar repression of Franco’s Spain, a fairy tale that centers on Ofelia, a lonely and dreamy child living with her mother and adoptive father, who is a military officer tasked with ‘ridding the area’ of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with fantastical creatures and secret destinies.

Do yourself a favor, if you haven’t seen Guillermo Del Toro’s outstanding work of art, you need to RUN to the nearest movie theater and go see this film.

A BRICK IN THE TOILET

MyplanetI just spent the last hour trolling through Myspace trying to find subject matter for future posts — sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don’t, but tonight was one of those lucky nights.

The Myspace “Myplanet” profile page promotes greener living and has a lot of great links to other green-centric profiles.

My Planet blurbs:

In 1983, a group of determined students in Southern California were sent home by their teachers on a mission to help combat a serious drought. They promptly dropped bricks into their toilets, and reduced water waste in their households by more than a third. Today, as a result of what we now call the “California Toilet Revolution”, the states sell only ultra low-flush toilets, and saves enough water to fill 28 gallons jugs per household, each day. If you have a toilet, and it is not a ULF, you can easily find one.

Learning how to be a little more green was definitely worth staying up past my bedtime.

WHO’S LONELY NOW?

Jessica RoseLonelygirl15 is a fictional video blog staring super cute New Zealand actress Jessica Lee Rose as the rebellious and sometimes silly Bree. The bedroom confessions of Lonelygirl15 has become one of the most viewed YouTube series to date and has garnered international attention.

Lonelygirl15’s blurbs:

What can I say? Hmmm my name is Bree. I’m homeschooled, so I guess that makes me a freak. Not! I don’t care about a lot of the same things people talk about on MySpace and YouTube, but I’m trying to learn :). A lot people requested that I come on here too…so here I am just trying to learn. Hope you like it :)

Declared as the “Face of YouTube”, Lonelygirl15 remains the site’s quintessential form of self expression .

PIGMENT INTO THE SKIN

Kat Von DWith a style uniquely her own, tattoo artist and goddess of cool, Kat Von D rocks the cable airwaves on TLC’s hit reality TV show, “Miami Ink.”

Kat’s blurbs:

Growing up in the Inland Empire, a collision of influences led Kat into tattoing much earlier than most, her first tattoo came at age 14, an old english “J” on her ankle, a memento of a love gone-by. Shortly thereafter, realizing her natural art ability, in early 1996 her friends asked her to pick up the machine and get to work on them (her first effort was a Misfits skull with a homemade rig), the tattooing wasn’t easy but she knew it felt right and she knew she wanted to pursue it. In 1998, she began working in her first professional shop, Sin City Tattoo, a local place in her neighborhood.

Kat Von D is all about her art but when she’s not, she’s all about being the KAT’s MEOW!

JON BRION…MEANINGLESS

Jon BrionI remember the first time I saw Jon Brion perform at Largo (a small club in L.A.), the room was packed with music aficionados all waiting patiently for the virtuoso. I was on my second gin and tonic when out of the corner of my eye he appeared. He walked up to the stage with a what seemed to be a glass of beer (black & tan) in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other — oh, this is going to be good.

Jon Brion’s blurbs:

Music producer/composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist… it’s safe to say that Jon Brion excels at whichever musical hat he choses to wear. Remarkably self-taught in music, Jon has collaborated with and/or produced albums for Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, David Byrne, the Eels, Sean Lennon.

In addition to producing, Jon has scored several films, including Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and I Heart Huckabees. Brion frequently works with director Paul Thomas Anderson, with whom he has a preferential working relationship. In addition to scoring almost all of his films, Brion contributed music to Boogie Nights and had a cameo in the film as a moustachioed guitar player.

He sat down at the piano and with a quick wave to the crowd, it was on. He proceeded to mesmerize the audience not only with his performance but his amazing musicianship; he played every instrument on stage (guitar, bass, drums, piano, whatever) by himself, no backup band, no nothing, just him; using a live looping technique, he first recorded the bass, drums and keyboard tracks and then sang and played guitar live over them — it was “ah” inspiring…two hours and maybe 20 songs later it was all over and I had just seen the best show of my life.

GOOD KARMA, BAD KARMA, PUNKROCK KARMA

Jeffery Sebelia Watching last week’sProject Runway” finale, I thought for sure that they were going to rob Jeffery Sebelia from showing at Olympus Fashion Week, all because of some hubbub another contestant started, but justice was served and not only did Jeffery Sebelia show at Olympus but he won the 3rd season of Bravo’s runaway hit show.

Jeffery’s blurbs:

fashion fag daddy da baby boy tattoo taurus freak free
friend disco rock punk raggae hippy scum homeless dirty
nasty huge acid shrooms dope sugar clean arrogant dead

Jeffery deserved to win, not only for his in-your face “I’m a f***king rockstar, so you should be a f***ing rockstar” line he presented but for the way he carried himself throughout the entire seasson; yeah he pissed people off and yeah, he told certain contestants what he thought of them, but that’s Punk-Rock Karma in a nut-shell: be true to yourself, fight for what you believe in and in the end, it’ll pay off.

AMERICAN HELLCAT

tila tequilaROLLING STONE’S 20th ANNUAL HOT ISSUE just proclaimed Vietnamese American model and aspiring Hip-Hop artist, Tila Tequila as the Most Popular Girl on Myspace.

Tila’s blurbs:

Tila Tequila has done it all on her own, and definitely on her own terms. She’s an internationally known star who has built her network of fans literally, one friend at a time. What’s more, she has the email addresses of all of her friends, who wouldn’t want that sort of access to their fans and crew?

The self-described “American Hellcat,” Tila’s internet shenanigans have also earned her the title “The Baddest Bitch on the Block,” at least according to her Myspace page and with over 1,428,055 Myspace friends and her hit song “F*** Ya Man,” I believe her — booyah.

THE PLANET OF THE BAPES

NigoThere’s been an escape from the planet of the BAPES, I repeat, there’s been an escape from the planet of the BAPES!

I’ve been rockin BAPE gear forever now, yes, way before Pharrell started wearing BAPE BBC tees on MTV and way before all the bootleg stuff started showing up at swap-meets across the country…don’t get me started.

Anyway, I was at a party the other night and someone asked me who started this cultural phenomenon and I told him, it’s a dude named “NIGO“. You mean JIGGA he replied back with a puzzled look on his face…ah, no, NIGO (too late) - now totally enamored with himself and his answer, he started into “jigga who, jigga what?” - yeah, that’s him.

NIGO’s blurbs:

I never set out to become Japan’s hottest fashion designer or an internationally famous arbiter of style, or to show young people how to rebel without losing their cool. But the fact that I am now one of the most influential movers and shakers of our generation does not strike me as particularly odd either. In fact, I focus on my passions, rather than on society’s expectations, as the secret of my success. I never planned too far ahead, wearing a T shirt and jeans plus two necklaces and a giant watch dripping with hip-hop quantities of bling. I just tried to do what I love and create the things that I wanted to create — I LIVE IN MY OWN WORLD

As long as there ignorant fools like the one I met at that party, I think I’ll be rockin my BAPEs for awhile longer - yay yay!

Is Tigarah “Baile” Funk’s next Superstar?

superstar

After contemplating a career as a politician or ambassador, TIGARAH felt she could best speak her mind if she made music her life. So, shortly after majoring in political science at Tokyo’s renowned Keio University, she started writing songs on her own in her tiny room in Tokyo, inspired by the Baile Funk music from Brazil.

In several trips to Sao Paulo and Rio, TIGARAH immersed herself in Brazilian culture and recorded music together with local musicians. It was in Rio where TIGARAH started collaborating with producer/beatmaker MR.D and they since formed a duo who write and produce everything together. Since 2003, they’re recording tracks on a regular basis in Los Angeles.

TIGARAH’s songs are inspired by many different styles: Baile Funk music, UK Grime, Baltimore Club and Hip-hop, all blended together with clever rhymes in Japanese that cover topics from culture clash, fake friends, defending your own style or shallow money-minded-ness. TIGARAH is all about swimming against the mainstream in today’s world of mass culture, choosing your own goal in life and going after your dream. A club tour in America and Japan and the release of TIGARAH’s first album is scheduled for 2006… stay tuned!
