EVER SO OFTEN…

aw_lydia.jpgAudrey Kawasaki creates airy, delicate images of girls. They’re usually submerged in porcelain skins and have a sense of vulnerability that makes them both fastidious and alluring.

Audrey Kawasaki’s blurbs:

The themes in Audrey Kawasaki’s work are contradictions within themselves. Her work is both innocent and erotic. Each subject is attractive yet disturbing. Audrey’s precise technical style is at once influenced by both manga comics and Art Nouveau. Her sharp graphic imagery is combined with the natural grain of the wood panels she paints on, bringing an unexpected warmth to enigmatic subject matter.

I hope to own one of Audrey’s paintings one day - soon.

BLANK SHEET OF PAPER

deoseo1.jpgDeseo’s art is like really good comfort food: tasty, familiar and satisfying and just like all good comfort food - when you think you’ve had enough, you’re back for seconds…and thirds.

Deseo’s blurbs:

When you look through the work, keep the word diversity in mind. Because the more open your mind is, the more beauty you’ll see, not only in this page but everywhere you go. It’s what Deseo has and will continue to illustrate with the different and beautiful women that express ideas, events, or issues that fill his mind.

You can find prints and other merchandise on his website - yummy.

THE SOUNDS OF MONSTERISM ISLAND

MonsterbandPete Fowler is one of my favorite illustrators, he’s probably best know for his work with the band Super Furry Animals and the Monsterism website and designer toys.

Taking the Monsterism concept to another level and literally another medium, “The Sounds of Monsterism Island Vol 1″ is a mix-tape compilation full of yummy exotica, electronica and 60s soft-rock.

TSMI blurbs:

This compilation album serves as a companion to Pete Fowler’s World of Monsterism, and features a range of music from psychedelic sixties rock to modern indie pop.

The “Sounds Of Monsterism Island” is a compilation album that works as a soundtrack to the world of Monsterism, created by the Welsh born, London based artist Pete Fowler. The album features psychedelic music from the ’60s and beyond into the 21st Century, much of it unearthed and put on CD for the first time. Fowler dreamt up the World Of Monsterism sometime between his birth in Cardiff in 1969 and the time the first set of Monsterism toys were released in the autumn of 2001.

Tracks that stand out: Martin Denny’s “Sake Rock” and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band’s “A Child’s Guide To Good And Evil”.

HELLO NOVEMBER

Hello NovemberThe great thing about art is that it’s all subjective and that’s why I love Etsy.com. There you’ll find all kinds of artists with all types of styles making all types of things for all sorts of people.

Today I found artist Ashleyg and the second print in her “HELLO” series named “Hello November” and in the immortal words of Ice Cube; “Today was a good day.”

Ashleyg’s blurbs:

I strongly believe in what you’re happiest doing at five is what you will be happiest doing your entire life. Growing up, I endlessly drew and embroidered onto washcloths that my grandma gave me little creatures and animals that I desperately wanted to live in the woods of my backyard.

On the first of every month Ashley releases a limited edition print. The print is only available for that month, and $5.00 of every print will go to charity.

PIGMENT INTO THE SKIN

Kat Von DWith a style uniquely her own, tattoo artist and goddess of cool, Kat Von D rocks the cable airwaves on TLC’s hit reality TV show, “Miami Ink.”

Kat’s blurbs:

Growing up in the Inland Empire, a collision of influences led Kat into tattoing much earlier than most, her first tattoo came at age 14, an old english “J” on her ankle, a memento of a love gone-by. Shortly thereafter, realizing her natural art ability, in early 1996 her friends asked her to pick up the machine and get to work on them (her first effort was a Misfits skull with a homemade rig), the tattooing wasn’t easy but she knew it felt right and she knew she wanted to pursue it. In 1998, she began working in her first professional shop, Sin City Tattoo, a local place in her neighborhood.

Kat Von D is all about her art but when she’s not, she’s all about being the KAT’s MEOW!

KUSTOM KULTURE LIFESTYLE

Trophy QueenTrophy Queen was founded in 2000 by artist and designer Jenny Parker. Jenny’s passion for hot rods and vintage motorcycles, along with her training in auto upholstery inspired her to create a line of accessories that would carry out the hot rod / kustom kulture theme.

Trophy Queen’s blurbs:

I’m a handbag designer and Hot Rod Show Promoter looking for no bull shit, cool people, who make me laugh and inspire me in one way or another. Dudes looking for chics with big boobs and tattoos need not apply!

Today Jenny continues to live the kustom kulture lifestyle, riding her 1948 Indian Chief Motorcycle, and crusing with her husband John in their chopped 51 Ford business coupe. She vends at dozens of hot rod, rockabilly, and tattoo events, and sells to many countries through out the world, while still keeping that old school craftsmanship.

SMEAR TACTICS

SmearI remember the first time I saw my first SMEAR piece on Wilshire Blvd. (which is right down the street from where I live in Los Angeles), I was late to work, my car was running on empty and I was pissed off at the guy in front of me. Just as I was about to lose it, I looked up and there it was: a pimpled faced cartoon masquerading as street art… uh it’s kind of interesting, I guess - whatever, I need to get gas.

SMEAR’s blurbs:

Born in the late 60’s and forced to live in the caves of Allateena in Northern Europe, Federo Campizzi (SMEAR) began drawing with rocks in the dirt. His mother amused by her sons constant fixation decided to move to AMERICA. After hitching a ride on a horse drawn wagon and begging their way aboard a bus and then a boat the Campizzi’s soon found themselves in AMERICA. Broke and poor living in the South Bronx a young Federo could be found reliving his toddler days sitting under a tree or by a broken down swingset drawing his name in the dirt over and over and over and over again…. He was looked out strangely by the other kids.

It wasn’t till later that day as I was driving back home from work I got the chance to take a really good look at the piece again; my car was still running on empty but this time the pimpled faced frowning SMEAR looked different to me and that’s when I got it…

ART AND PEANUT BUTTER

The YummiesDon’t look now but THE YUMMIES are taking over the world!

Yummies blurb:

THE YUMMIES is an art collective that uses art through paintings, clothes, and performs live as THE YUMMIES characters.

THE YUMMIES has performed with performers such as Kid Koala, MF Doom, DJ Premier, DJP and DJ Idiom.

THE YUMMIES do live painting, rap performances, DJing, break dancing and beat boxing to name a few. Although they’re not the best, people seem to like it through their smiling and laughing.

Mascot Mannie, Sheep Head and Ninja Nate are just a few of my favorite Yummies but there’s always more Yums lurking around the corner, so be sure to frequent their website for updates and keep your Yummies on check!

STICKY POP ART

PopClingBack in the day a typical sticker collection usually comprised of a handful of “Star Wars” stickers (the blue series if you were lucky), a bunch of “Garbage Patch Kids” stickers and maybe a few “Hello Kitty” stickers that your sister got you from the Sanrio store in the mall…man, have things changed.

Pop Cling blurbs:

Pop Cling reproduces art. All kinds of art. Like adhesive-backed art that you can peel off and stick to any smooth surface. Some people stick our prints on concrete floors, or on sliding glass doors leading to balconies, or right on the walls behind couches. You don’t need a frame, you just need a blank space. Voila, you have fresh pop art on your wall from new, favorite, and cutting edge artists.

We also make skateboards. Crazy skateboards. Digitally-printed skateboards. We get such yummy color density and great resolution that it warms our hearts just thinking about it. Plus, who doesn’t want kickass images from cool artists we personally enjoy hanging out with?

Looks like I may be starting up a new collection…booyah!

I AM NOT AN ICON

Teedo Created in a software company in Tokyo, he was supposed to serve as a generic face for software interfaces, a simple non-offensive design but something happened - a group of rogue Designers discovered him and gave him a name, his name is TEEDO.

Teedo’s blurbs:

Before August 13 2006, I was an Icon! Yes! I was trapped in a world of Software. You may have seen me on a Pocket PC, Smartphone, Palm or maybe a chat room; this was my prison, this was my living hell. But then I was freed, giving a real identity and removed from the confinements of digital software. Now I have been unleashed into the world, a place where none of my peers have ventured before a place where I plan to reek havoc and destruction. The corporations that created me now fear me, fear what I might do, fear what I already know. My name is Teedo, I am not an icon.

With dreams of being hit up on walls of every major city on the planet, in the form of street Art, my boy Teedo is well on his way and remember, he’s not an ICON.

THE EMPIRE OF THE PIXEL

Bexel Boy“Bexel Studio: The Empire of Pixel” is the brain child of 22 year old Bexel Boy: with an eye for detail and an imagination that’s out of this world, he rocks each pixel as if his life depended on it.

Bexel blurb:

Bexel was founded in 2005 by thailand graphic designer, Best Thongsuk who is studying at Rangsit University. Later on Oat Limp, from the same university joined the group in 2006 as a sound engineer & song writer and “Bexel Art : The Empire of Pixel” is our slogan.

We have produced both visual design and sound which includes Pixel Graphic Design, Motion Pixel, Pixel Character, Pixel Toy, 8-bit Sound, Digital Music, recording, Illustration and Every Thing of Pixel.

I’m not sure what applications and techniques Bexel Boy is using, but whatever they are, it’s working, cause the results are nothing short of pure unadulterated pixel art goodness!

Bexel Studio is located in Bangkok Thailand — rock on!
